ABOUT THE BLOCK

A message from the creator

As many of you know, life as a POC attending a PWI is such a different experience compared to our counterparts. During my application process, I found myself rummaging through endless Youtube and TikTok videos, searching for just one piece of content that would give me a *realistic* depiction of what my life could look like at BU. Long story short, I didn’t see anything that could give me what I wanted. Most of the people documenting their experience were white, and as I stated before, that’s just two different lifestyles we’d have to live. I wanted to see more of “me” online. I wanted to see someone that looked like my friends back at home showing me what they experienced during their time here.

So I created a spam page, where I would just post whatever photos and videos I took with my friends that day. But after I had some time to reflect on my application experience, I realized that the spam page was essentially a form of what I wanted to see during my application process. And now, here we are. What started as @leahmcfarlsss (may she rest in peace), turned into @theblockis_25.

The Block was created to give just one of the many Black perspectives experiencing life here at BU. And it slowly turned into a community for the Black and Brown students. A friend of mine described it as “your home away from home”. And I think that’s a great way to put it. We wanted to create an environment that gave the same vibe as that one block all your friends live on at home. You know, the one where all those parties were happening. Just a block filled with friends, family, and community. Living at a PWI for the next four years can be a challenge at times, and I think we should have something that feels safe. A safe and happy place. Somewhere where you could go back and rest, regain your power and just go back out there and take over the world.

So, come as you are, bring what you can, and just vibe.

Your Friends,

The Block
